When looking for makeup brushes there are certain points you want to consider. Feel will be a crucial element— no one feels glamorous using a scratchy brush on their face. Durability will be another important factor to keep in mind. If a brush performs well only to fall apart the first time you wash it, was it really worth the purchase? Probably not. You will also want to make sure your makeup brushes are full and soft. This will lend to the quality of application of your makeup. Finally, you’ll want to consider if the hairs of the brush stay or if they immediately fall out. The two factors are the softness of the brush and how well the bristles stay in the brush.

Another thing to think about is ergonomics. How does the brush feel in your hand? If the brush is too heavy or is hard to hold you most likely won’t get the best use from it. Additionally, you’ll want to consider what the brushes are made from. You’ll want bristles you can clean in order to ward off bacteria.

Once you have your brushes you’ll want to make sure to maintain them with regular washing. Follow the steps below to get those brushes squeaky clean!

Wet brushes (just the bristles) with room temperature water. Try not to get the area where the brush connects to the handle wet as this can cause bristles to fall out!
Work soap into brushes against your palm.
Rinse the brush hairs until the water runs clean then gently swipe brush over a paper towel.
Reshape the brush and lay the brush on the counter to dry.
